2013 POSNA International Educational Scholarship for the Annual Meeting and
2013 POSNA-AAOS Scholarship for the International Pediatric Orthopaedic Symposium

Dear POSNA Members:

The Children’s Orthopedics in Underserved Regions committee would like to call for nominations for our International Visiting Scholars Program.   POSNA intends to support visiting scholars to come to the POSNA Annual Meeting and to IPOS.   We also hope that the recipients will be able to spend an additional period of time at local/regional institutions to supplement their educational experience.  Nominees should be from a resource challenged environment, have a need for financial support, have the majority of their practice in pediatric orthopedics, and ideally be a leader in his or her community.

As a sponsor, you will be responsible for coordinating the recipient’s trip to the United States, and hosting them at the annual meeting or IPOS.  Responsibilities include:

  • Submit nomination and letter of recommendation to POSNA office by deadline (November 1). The individual who submits a nomination must be available to perform all duties required of the sponsor should the candidate be selected.
  • If the candidate is selected for a scholarship to attend one of the two meetings, the sponsor must attend and serve to coordinate the scholar’s activities at that meeting. While the sponsor is not responsible for paying for meals or transportation from the hotel to the meeting venue for the scholar, the sponsor is responsible for:
Advising and assisting  the scholar  with travel arrangements and VISA application
Picking up the scholar from the airport and transport to assigned hotel for the meeting
Introducing the scholar to colleagues at the meeting.
       Accompanying scholar to social events
Helping to coordinate (along with COUR subcommittee) a visit to a local or regional center for observing clinic and surgeries. Negotiate with local institutions for transportation, room and board.
Submit evaluation to POSNA at end of program (by June 1 for annual meeting and by January 1 for IPOS).
The local or regional host will be selected from a pool of volunteers, maintained by COUR specifically for this purpose. The COUR committee will be available to assist and advise you.

Any POSNA member could also participate by:
  • Donating air-miles to help finance scholars (contact Cristina Cabral: cabral@aaos.org)
  • Hosting a recipient at your home institution, including room and board, and travel expenses, for several days or a week, pre or post POSNA/IPOS meeting for educational exchange. The COUR committee will keep a database of volunteers, and will send an email out to those in the database as the meeting approaches. (Send email to Cristina Cabral: cabral@aaos.org or Travis Matheney: travis.matheney@childrens.harvard.edu).
Please email your nominations with contact info to Cristina Cabral: cabral@aaos.orgThe application form, recommendation and sponsor forms are all available on the POSNA website: http://www.posna.org/education/cour/application/COURApplicationIntro.aspThe deadline for receiving completed applications is November 1st 2012.  Applications will be reviewed in November.  Scholar selection will be announced in December.  Thanks for your consideration.
